Monopoli
Near Polignano, to the South along the Via Appia Traiana, at about 25 kms. from Masseria Poesia, lies Monopoli. Another ancient Greek settlement, it is one of the most densely inhabited cities and most active ports of the region till today. Its characteristic Its walled medieval center has been built on top of a more ancient center of Messapic abodes, protected by walls in the fifth century BC, looks over the sea. Monopoli is also known as the city of the hundred contrade (boroughs). Its territory is divided in contrade whose names refer to houses, masserias and churches that have long since disappeared.
